What Should I Wear to a Networking Event?

With today’s ever-changing work environments, professionals are often at a crossroads when deciding what to wear for in-person meetings, video meetings, or networking events. Professionals refer to two types of attire, business, and business casual. There is no clear line to delineate between the two, so let’s talk about business casual! Here are some commonly accepted guidelines for men and women.

Networking Event Attire for Men

  • Business dress pants or khakis

  • Button-down shirts, sweaters, or polo shirts

  • Close-toed shoes such as loafers or oxfords

  • Optional belt that matches your shoes

  • Optional tie and jacket or sport coat

Networking Event Attire for Women

  • Dress pants, khakis, or knee-length skirts

  • Blouses, sweaters, button-downs, henley or polo shirts

  • Knee-length or full-length dresses

  • Optional cardigans, blazers, or jackets

  • Closed-toed shoes such as loafers, oxfords, pumps, or flats

  • Simple, professional accessories such as scarves, belts, or jewelry

Solid colors and darker shades (grey, navy, or black) are generally preferred. If you’re unsure what is acceptable in a specific setting, it’s best to select more traditionally accepted business casual outfits. Then, you can observe your surroundings and adjust accordingly.
