Celebrate Cinco de Mayo: Knoxville's Best Takeout Tacos

This Tuesday is Cinco de Mayo, and it will likely look a little different this year (and what a shame since it falls on Taco Tuesday!). Mexican restaurants are usually slammed with enthusiastic patrons wanting to participate in and celebrate their culture, but with restaurants not fully up and running, that may not be an option this year. I know we all have our favorite Mexican restaurants with reliably delicious chips and queso, but if you’re looking to shake things up, here are some of the best taco places in town that are offering takeout!

Let’s start with a little history lesson: what does Cinco de Mayo celebrate? According to History.com, “Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.” This battle was a very symbolic milestone on the road to Mexico’s victory over France. “While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.”

Who doesn’t love a good cultural celebration? Here in the states, we’ve taken this Mexican dish and really made it our own. What better way to embrace and celebrate this lively culture? Here are the top 5 places to get your taco fix this Cinco de Mayo and support local businesses!

 1. CJ’s Tacos

CJ’s started out as a food truck (and a stand at the TN Valley Fair) and quickly became a favorite at Central Filling Station (I can’t wait for it to reopen!). With their growing popularity, they began catering events, working festivals, and have finally opened a permanent location at Embassy Suites in Downtown Knoxville. They’re currently offering curbside pickup, so you can get these awesome tacos and keep your social distance. No matter what you get, don’t forget the chipotle sour cream!

2. SoKno Taco

SoKno is a crowd-favorite located in South Knoxville (hence the name: SoKno). This quirky crew offers up tasty tacos (including some popular vegetarian options) and beer to-go. And beginning May 1st, they’re opening at 50% capacity, so you can try for a table if you’re feeling brave. If you’d rather stay in your sweatpants watching Netflix a while longer though, they also offer no-contact carryout.

3. Soccer Taco

Soccer Taco is a Market Square favorite! Even though Downtown Knoxville doesn’t have its usual livelihood and spunk, you can get a taste of the fun by ordering takeout tacos from the downtown, Bearden, or Northshore locations. They have a fantastic variety of tacos to choose from, including some traditional Mexican-style street tacos!

4. Retro Taco

Retro Taco, like CJ’s, started out as a food truck, but they now have a permanent location in Strawberry Plains. While it seems they’re only open for takeout at the moment, Retro Taco is definitely a place to keep in mind later in the summer since they regularly have live music and patio games. They are self-proclaimed experts of Cali-Mex cuisine, and their queso is killer!

5. Chivo Taqueria

Chivo just popped up on the Downtown scene in recent years, but it seems that everyone who tries it loves it! They have a great variety of tacos, all with wonderfully punny names from “The Codfather” to “Limp Brisket.” And here’s what I know you’ve all been waiting for: they have carryout margaritas!
